FAQ
Who can join Sigma Omega Upsilon?
SOU is co-ed, open to students of all majors, and international students who are studying abroad at UofSC for the semester or year. We are also the only business fraternity on campus to allow international students studying abroad to become members right away. Full time UofSC students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
What are the brotherhood statuses?
We have three brotherhood statuses: Sigma Omega, Honorary Member, and Emeritus Sigma Omega.
Sigma Omegas are fully initiated brothers who have completed the pledging process as Sigmas. Brothers will remain Sigma Omegas until graduation.
Honorary Members are international exchange students who are at UofSC for the semester or year. They do not have to complete the pledging process and are initiated immediately after recruitment. Honorary Members can participate in a modified pledging process if they would like, to help them grow professionally, socially, and culturally.
Emeritus Sigma Omegas are Sigma Omegas who have graduated and become Sigma Omega Upsilons, but are attending a qualified graduate program. Emeritus Sigma Omegas can attend all brother events during the duration of their graduate studies.
What will I gain as an Honorary Member?
As an honorary member you will gain access to all the professional, social, and cultural events that the brotherhood hosts, our alumni network, and mentorship. We'd love to learn from YOU! Exchange students are a great way for us to broaden our understanding of other cultures and lifestyles and our brotherhood looks forward to forming relationships with international students each semester.
How do I become an Honorary Member?
Attend our recruitment week, usually the second or third week of the semester, and let us know you are interested in an honorary member status. From there you will go through the recruitment process alongside everyone else and if you make it all the way through, we will extend a bid to you. If you have any circumstances you'd like us to be aware of, such as language or cultural barriers, we are more than happy to work with you throughout the process. You can find more information about the week on the “RECRUITMENT” tab above.
Many of our brothers have studied abroad and we know it is a very exciting time, but it can also be difficult. SOU works hard to provide exchange students a home away from home and supply international students with all the resources and knowledge they need to be successful and enjoy their time studying in the United States.
If you're interested in joining or have any questions, please go to the “CONTACT” tab and fill out a “General Inquire” and you will hear from us soon!
